Mikaela Shwer: SAE Film student / Cannes Film Festival winner

Mikaela is an international student from America who started her Bachelor of Film Production (BFP) in November 2007 here at SAE Byron Bay. Always the hard worker, Mikaela entered into the Cannes Student Filmmaking Program, where film students from all over the world get teamed up together to shoot a documentary in and around the beautiful city of Cannes.

"It was a fun and exciting project, and working with these students from all over the world was really inspiring"said Mikaela "I had students from Brazil, Jordan, Canada, Australia and the US in my team, so in a sense it was like a normal day at SAE with all the different nationalities studying there. I had no problem being part of this team of different personalities and cultures, in fact I loved it". Not having a problem to be part of the team is somewhat of an understatement, since her team won the "Best Team Collaboration" category of the student Filmmaking Program. Winning a price at the Cannes Film Festival is no small feat to say the least, but how about winning two? Well… Mikaela did just that. She was awarded for her outstanding editing skills by winning the "best new emerging editor' category.

"I was really surprised to hear we had won the best team award" a modest Mikaela told us, "but I never expected to win any of the individual awards, I guess studying hard paid of after all ha-ha”. Yeah Mikaela, it does!

With her success in Cannes, Mikaela gained a lot of experience and loads of contacts from all over the world, and along the way bagged $2000 and an Adobe CS3 software package to help her with her studies.
We're proud to be part of Mikaela's success and we would like to congratulate her with winning these two fantastic awards, we're sure many more will follow.

Just remember us when you win your first Academy Award, Mikaela
