SAE Institute Byron Bay

Student Selection Procedures

Access and Equity Policy

SAE Institute endeavours to provide an environment where access to courses and financial support is not limited on the basis of age, gender or sexual orientation, marital status, national or ethnic background, religion or physical or intellectual disability. The Institute seeks to promote equal opportunities for all prospective and enrolled students. In so-doing, SAE Institute ensures that terms of all anti-discrimination legislation are enshrined in its own constitution, practiced and enforced by all employees.

Because of the nature of some programs of study, certain disabilities (eg hearing or sight impairment) may preclude individuals from being admitted. Certain applications may be rejected on the grounds of health and safety.

Policy in Relation to Applicants with Disabilities

SAE Institute is sensitive to the desires and requirements of all individuals and groups wishing to undertake study with the organisation and, wherever possible, endeavours to provide an environment where study can be safely undertaken by students with a range of abilities. Selection procedures for applicants with disabilities are dealt with on an individual basis, taking into account the precise nature of the disability and in the context of the qualification being sought.

All programs of study with SAE involve the use of electronic and electrical technology. The degree of reliance on this technology will vary from course to course. For the most part, these requirements produce no significant barrier to access by those with disabilities. However, SAE Institute is particularly cautious in circumstances where students will have access to equipment which, if incorrectly handled, may bring about the threat of injury or death. In the context of programs currently on offer, this concern is reserved largely for the film making strand, where students are required to handle high-voltage and often excessively heated lighting rigs or may, on occasion, have to access elevated gantry systems. (Note: gantry systems are not currently in use at branches of SAE in Australia.)

Generally, these considerations will only impact on those who suffer from severely restricted mobility (normal wheelchair access excepted) or extreme hearing or sight impairment. At the time of application to study, determination will be made, by the Program Coordinator or Institute Manager, as to whether an applicants disability precludes them from access to a course on the grounds of safety. Where necessary, this will be done in consultation with specialists and health and safety professionals.

At the discretion of the Institute Manager, students registered disabled may, at their own request, be accompanied during their studies by a registered carer or direct family member.
